Please encourage parent carers, children and young people, and anyone else who wants to share their experiences of SEND services in North Yorkshire to participate. Please share this information widely on your networks. This informal gathering of views will take place between 28 June and 23 July, ahead of a formal consultation in Autumn this year. Holiday activity and food programme (HAF) – update from North Yorkshire Together |
Audience: All schools Cascade to Heads and all school staff The Department for Education is providing local authorities with funding to coordinate a holiday programme offer combining provision of healthy food and enriching activities for free school meal eligible children and young people. You can find out more about the HAF programme in a brilliant video starring Marcus Rashford MBE The County Council has commissioned North Yorkshire Together, a partnership between Rural Arts, North Yorkshire Sport and North Yorkshire Youth, as lead provider for the programme which will be branded as FEAST. The activity sessions will be available to all children and young people in North Yorkshire, but will be free to families eligible for benefits related free schools meals (FSM). To make sure eligible families know about the programme we will be sending every school a box of named envelopes, one for every child currently receiving free school meals, during week commencing 12 July. Each envelope will include a letter with information about the FEAST programme and every eligible child will have a unique code that they will need to use when they book direct with providers. We’re also sending all free school meal eligible children a booklet with ideas for activities and things to do over the summer holidays. There will be online resources and inspiration that all families can enjoy, which we’ll be promoting through social media throughout the summer. Look out for your box of FEAST letters and booklets, and when they do arrive please give them to the children named on the envelopes before the end of term. If you’re planning face to face summer school provision we’d love to talk to you about how we could incorporate this into the FEAST programme. |

Attendance recording with the DfE |
Audience: All schools Cascade to Headteachers, Senior Leadership team and Attendance Leads Across the county there has been a recent rise in positive Covid cases in a number of schools. In some cases, due to the numbers of pupils and staff isolating, this has resulted in almost closing or closing the school for a period of time. Please can leaders ensure that the DfE attendance return is completed daily to ensure that there is an accurate understanding of the attendance position across the county. In addition, if your school does have a positive case please can you ensure that you inform Public Health who will be able to support you with this. |

Audience – Headteachers and Designated Safeguarding Leads in schools Cascade to: all staff in schools Action required – please note this info and share the information about ‘Report Remove’ with young people and parents/carers.
REPORT REMOVE - new tool to empower children and young people to stop spread of nude images online. A message from the North Yorkshire Safeguarding Children Partnership North Yorkshire Safeguarding Children Partnership (NYSCP) is promoting the new Childline and Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) tool which helps children and young people to report a nude image or video of themselves that has been shared online. The IWF can then take steps to remove it from the Internet. Given the recent Ofsted report and research from many other organisations, we know there are many reasons for taking/sharing and equally many barriers to reporting images and videos. It is therefore imperative that young people know that they can take action themselves and that something will be done. Importantly, a young person can even report an image/video that hasn't been uploaded and shared. The IWF will assign a 'hash' (a digital fingerprint) to prevent the image being uploaded by anyone. More information from the IWF can be found HERE and the Childline reporting tool, ‘Report Remove’, can be found HERE. We would urge you to raise awareness of the new service and share the information about the ‘Report Remove’ tool with your young people and their parents/carers. We would also like to highlight the newly launched NYSCP Threshold Guide. The “Framework for decision-making: Right help, at the right time by the right person” has been developed to help and support practitioners working with children across all agencies and organisations, when faced with a decision about the safety and wellbeing of a child or young person. It is a collaborative approach to support and drive our shared ambition of the right help, at the right time from the right service and, importantly, from the right person.

Virtual School Head role extension |
Audience: All schools Cascade to: Headteachers and Designated LAC lead The Government has announced more than £16 million for councils to extend the role of Virtual School Heads from September this year, meaning there will be a local champion for children with a social worker in every local authority in England. This will ensure that more focus is placed on children with a social worker, targeting support earlier on in these young people’s lives and helping improve how they engage with education. Small Schools Professional Practice Group |
Audience: All small schools Cascade: Headteachers, Senior Leaders There are many challenges unique to small schools by working collaboratively we can explore solutions and share good practice. Our first small school network will take place on 6th July 1.30-3.30pm. This term we are going to focus on PSHE in a mixed age class with Clare Barrowman the Health and Wellbeing Adviser leading a session. As there are changes in the EYFS we also plan to provide updates on the EYFS reforms and the implications for mixed EYFS and key stage one classes and how to ensure challenge with these groups in one classroom environment. We have many small schools who have found innovative ways to develop curriculums for mixed age classes including whole key stages. At this network we will be joined by two Executive Head teachers who lead 4 small schools; they are going to share their curriculum journey and strategies for teaching foundation subjects in mixed age classes. As part of these networks moving forwards we want to include the latest research as well as forming working parties to participate in new research projects; we aim to facilitate opportunities for national guest speakers and continue to share the good practice that already exists.

Safeguarding Training for Governors |
Audience: All schools Cascade: Headteachers, Governing Bodies, Clerks
The Governance handbook recommends that every Governor and Trustee should receive safeguarding training so that they understand their responsibilities and can play their part in ensuring the school’s safeguarding arrangements are robust and monitored effectively. Best practice is for every member of the board to complete safeguarding training and that this is updated at intervals as requirements are updated. The School Improvement Service and North Yorkshire HR are running a 90 minute webinar - Safeguarding Training for Governors – and one free place is being offered to every school in July (maintained and non maintained – including academies). There is an expectation that a governor from every LA maintained school will take up this free place. The details are: SI-0721-T009 - Monday 5th July at 5pm SI-0721-T010 - Tuesday 6th July at 10.30am Bookings for this free session to be made via NYES, in the usual way. Please inform your Chair and board members of the dates and firmly encourage a member of the board to attend one of these training sessions. A Safeguarding Overview webinar for governors will be included in the NYCC governor training programme each term, and can also be booked for the board to attend as a bespoke session. Children are being encouraged to go wild in the library this summer! |
Audience: all schools Cascade to pupils and their families Children can find out all about looking after the natural world this summer when North Yorkshire libraries and the Reading Agency invite them to sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge. The Challenge is aimed at children aged 4 to 11, encouraging them to read six library books over the summer holiday period. This year the theme is Wild World Heroes, and is all about what they can do to make a difference to the environment and stand up for the planet. To take part and be a Wild World Hero, children just need to sign up at their nearest library. They’ll be given a colourful fold out map of an imaginary place called Wilderville. As they read their chosen books, they will receive stickers (some scratch & sniff!) and can use the stickers to fix an environmental problem and make Wilderville a better, greener place to be. There are more free incentives to collect along the way and those who complete the Challenge will receive a medal and a certificate to celebrate their achievement. The challenge is open to all children aged four to 11, and they can choose from a vast range of books at the library or download them as an eBook from the catalogue. There are loads of fantastic new books about protecting the planet and our wildlife but they don’t have to stick to that theme – any library book they want to borrow will count. It’s a great way to encourage children to keep up their reading skills during the long break. A brilliant programme of online events for families will also support the Challenge, including a cartoon workshop, a story hunt, finding out why rubbish isn’t rubbish and how to be a North Yorkshire Rotters! Look out for more details of the events and great reading recommendations on the @nycclibraries Facebook page and local library pages too. The challenge starts in libraries on Sat 10th July and finishes on Sat 11th September. |
