Holiday activity and food (HAF) programme update |
Audience: All schools Cascade: Headteacher and school staff Thank you for helping us let eligible families know about the FEAST North Yorkshire holiday club programme, which provided a welcome opportunity for children to socialise, learn new skills and stay active over the summer holidays. The holiday clubs were open to all young people in the county, but were free to those receiving benefits-related free school meals. Almost 16,000 free places were provided, helping to close the experience gap for many children and young people in North Yorkshire. An incredible 22% of FSM eligible children attended across the county. We’re delighted to announce that FEAST will be back in time for the Christmas break, with free places at face to face holiday activities available for eligible children. We would be grateful for your help in letting people know about our plans for the FEASTive fun sessions by sharing a letter and activity pack with eligible families. Named letters will be sent out to schools during week commencing 1st November. This will let eligible families who currently receive benefits-related free school meals know about the programme and how they can take part. Activity packs for eligible families will be sent out to schools during the first week in December. We’ll include further updates in upcoming editions of the Red Bag, and thank you for your ongoing enthusiasm and support! If you have any questions, please contact us at hello@northyorkshiretogether.co.uk Thank you! From the North Yorkshire Together team.
FEAST is being delivered by North Yorkshire Together, a partnership between Rural Arts, North Yorkshire Sport and North Yorkshire Youth commissioned by the County Council. Funding for the scheme has come from the Department for Education’s Holiday Activities and Food Programme. |

NYCC Policy & Procedures for Medical Education Service - September 2021 |
Audience: All schools Cascade: Headteachers On 1st September 2014, a duty came into force for governing bodies to make arrangements to support pupils with medical conditions. The statutory guidance Supporting Pupils with Medical Conditions (publishing.service.gov.uk) is intended to help governing bodies meet their legal responsibilities and sets out the arrangements they will be expected to make, based on good practice. The aim is to ensure that all children with medical conditions, in terms of physical and mental health, are properly supported. In September 2020, the Medical Education Service was launched to support schools with providing education for children who are unable to attend school due to their medical condition. NYCC have updated the Medical Education Service Procedures Document that can be found here. This is a guide for governing bodies and senior leads in schools to help them ensure that they are meeting the needs of children and young people with medical conditions as well as their statutory duties. Governing bodies should ensure that their school develops a policy for supporting children with medical conditions, which sets out arrangements such as the named person who has overall responsibility for policy implementation, procedures to be followed, training, collaborative working, emergency procedures, risk assessments, IHCPs and unacceptable practice. NYCC has provided a template policy that can be found here. School staff will be able to support most children and young people with medical conditions at school. However, if it becomes apparent that they will be absent from school for more than 15 days then staff should be proactive in making arrangements for ensuring the child or young person continues to receive a full-time (or equivalent) education. If staff feel they require support with this then it may become necessary to make a request for involvement from the Medical Education Service using the MES request form. As part of the request, the MES requires a copy of the school policy for supporting children with medical conditions. The MES also requires that section 4 of the request form is completed by a health professional; ideally, this would be someone who is currently supporting the child or young person with their medical condition and has a good understanding of how their condition affects their ability to attend school and how they are supporting them to get better. If schools are having difficulty getting medical professionals to complete section 4 then they can contact their area coordinator. The purpose of the MES is to provide short-term educational support until the child or young person is able to reintegrate back into school. There are four MES Area Coordinators across North Yorkshire. They are: • Scarborough, Whitby & Ryedale – Sarah Wright (Sarah.Wright6@northyorks.gov.uk) • Selby – Kate Hunter (Katharine.Hunter@northyorks.gov.uk) • Harrogate & Craven - Amy Wilson (Amy.Wilson@northyorks.gov.uk) • Hambleton & Richmond – Vicky Davis (Vicky.Davis@northyorks.gov.uk) If governing bodies and senior leaders would like advice and support with writing a school policy, they can contact their area coordinators. The Medical Education Service are running two webinars on Monday 18th October at 10:00 and 16:15 for Governing Bodies, Head Teachers and Senior Leaders to attend. This will cover the statutory duties school have to meet the needs of pupils with medical conditions, what the school policy should cover and when schools should make a request to the MES.
