Alternative Provision Directory
In response to feedback from schools, we have created an AP Directory that offers a list of independent providers by locality and with details of the provision each offer. The directory will help schools to arrange suitable AP within their local area and make it easier for schools to identify which offer the courses, qualifications and support required for students. All providers within the directory have evidenced that they meet minimum standards in relation to safeguarding and these are reviewed at least annually. Provider’s inclusion in the directory is not an endorsement in any way by NYCC. Schools must continue to ensure that any providers used are safe, appropriate and of sufficient quality at the point of use and throughout a young person’s time attending AP in line with statutory guidance.
Alternative Provision Guidance
Separate to the AP Directory, the LA have developed guidance which covers statutory duties and provides schools with clear advice on their roles and responsibilities when commissioning AP placements. It includes:
• Who can access AP and the reasons why a young person may need something other than a mainstream curriculum.
• NYCC framework of minimum standards regarding the monitoring and listing of providers in to the Alternative Provision Directory.
• The monitoring of providers across the county who may be suspected of operating an illegal school and the escalation process required to alert the Local Authority.
• A commissioning checklist for schools to follow regarding the quality assurance of providers to ensure safety and quality before a placement commences.
• Clear instructions to providers on their duties especially around the Safeguarding, and Health and Safety of children and young people.
• Links to current statutory guidance and useful NYCC documents.
