Opportunity Areas Webinar:

Teacher Recruitment and Retention and Workforce Development – what worked for us and how we approached it.

You will hear short presentations on the place-based approach the Opportunity Areas programme has taken to Teacher Recruitment and Retention and Workforce Development . From data-driven marketing to professional development, you will hear insights from successful projects in North Yorkshire Coast, Fenland and East Cambridgeshire, Stoke-on-Trent, Ipswich, and Bradford. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and discuss with other participants.

Our panel

• Liz Franey - Deputy Director and Opportunity Areas Senior Responsible Officer - chair. Liz has worked in a variety of roles in the Department for Education, including with the Regional Schools Commissioner and in Free Schools Division. Previously, she worked on trade and aid policies in the European Commission.

• Tricia Pritchard - Chair of the Fenland and East Cambridgeshire Partnership Board. Previously, she was a primary school headteacher in Oxfordshire prior to working ten years as an HMI. Currently, she is Chair of a multi-academy trust and trustee of another two educational charities.

• Kate Walter - Kate leads Northern Lights TSA , part of Northern Star Academies Trust. Northern Lights was commissioned by the Bradford Opportunity Area and Local Authority to deliver Bradford for Teaching. Kate has a long career beginning with physics teaching, moving to school leadership and her work in the Teaching School.

• Emma Robins - Principal at Graham School, Scarborough. Graham School is on the North Yorkshire Coast and has worked closely with the OA since its launch in 2017 in a range of areas including a successful recruitment project. Emma has over 30 years of experience as a teacher and senior leader in secondary schools across Yorkshire.

• Diane Swift – Diane is Director of Keele and North Staffordshire Teacher Education. She co-ordinates the Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Teacher Education Collective, which supports Teacher Educators in their work with beginning teachers. She is on the Stoke-on-Trent Opportunity Area Partnership Board.

• Dale Banham - Dale is Deputy Headteacher at Northgate High School and Sixth Form Centre in Ipswich. He is responsible for the Curriculum, Teaching & Learning and CPD. He has been teaching for nearly 30 years and has been a Head of History and Humanities Advisor for Suffolk LA. He has also provided CPD, training courses and resources for the Schools History Project, the Historical Association and a number of teacher training institutions.

Opportunity Areas

The Opportunity Areas programme has been making a difference for children and young people by bringing together national and local partners from businesses, education, civil society and community organisations and addressing priorities identified by analysis of data and engagement with local stakeholders.
